Municipal Elections in Ontario: Have your say!

We elect the people who govern our municipalities every 4 years. This is an election year and election day is Monday October 26. While municipal elections rarely get the attention that provincial or federal elections do, it is municipal governance that affects our day-to-day lives the most.

We elect the people who govern our municipalities every 4 years. This is an election year and election day is Monday October 26.

While municipal elections rarely get the attention that provincial or federal elections do, it is municipal governance that affects our day-to-day lives the most. Our streets, our property taxes, our school boards, transit, garbage, etc., all fall under municipal jurisdiction.

And while there are lots of ways that we as individual citizens can have an impact on our local communities, elections are an opportunity maintain the status quo or make changes in our municipal leadership.

“I don’t know who to vote for”

It’s important to vote; but so often we hear people say “I don’t know who to vote for!”. If we want a healthy democracy, however, we have to – all of us – take on the responsibility of informing ourselves and voting for candidates that we think will do the best job. We need to do that even when we feel choices are not ideal.

So here are some links to local area websites that you can use as a springboard to learn more about your local candidates. It’s also an opportunity to get out and talk to your neighbours. Civic discourse is a wonderful thing!
